Cristian Martín is an Associate Professor at the University of Málaga (UMA), where he is a member of the ERTIS research group and the ITIS Institute. He obtained his Ph.D. in Computer Science from UMA in 2018, with an International Mention and an Extraordinary Ph.D. Thesis Award. He currently also serves as Secretary of the Department of Languages and Computer Science at UMA.

His research focuses on distributed computing and software architectures, with particular emphasis on the Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning over data streams, and open digital twin platforms. His current research addresses real-time streaming machine learning, TinyML, soft sensors, and the development and composition of distributed digital twins, including approaches based on causality, knowledge graphs, and real-time synchronization. His research has evolved from the IoT and now sits at the intersection of AI and digital twins (which are both complementary). This research follows an open-source code approach, with numerous software solutions publicly available on GitHub and widely used by the research and engineering communities. Notable projects are Kafka-ML, an open-source framework for ML/AI over data streams, and OpenTwins, an open platform for digital twin development.

Cristian has led several research initiatives and is Principal Investigator and Coordinator of the European MSCA Staff Exchange project EVOLVE, as well as Co-PI of the Spanish research projects on digital twins DiTaS, OpenTwins-FED and GEDICAM; and TRIATHLON on AI for trihalomethanes detection. This brings the total funding secured to date as IP to over 500K. He has also participated in more than 30 research projects and technology-transfer contracts, including four European projects. He has supervised one doctoral thesis and is currently co-supervising three others, in addition to having supervised more than 40 bachelor/master theses.

He has carried out six international research stays, accumulating more than 12 months abroad, including two stays at Ghent University, Belgium (2016, pre-doctoral; 2025, post-doctoral), two at the IHP research institute in Frankfurt (Oder), Germany (2020–2021, post-doctoral), one at Incheon National University, South Korea (2022), and one at Sorbonne Paris Nord University (2023, post-doctoral). He has also received the Best Ph.D. Thesis in Computer Science Award at the University of Málaga for the 2019/2020 academic year.
